5 Tips for Removing Cyanoacrylate Adhesives

Cyanoacrylate adhesives are better known by their commercial names, such as Krazy Glue, Mighty Bond and Super Glue (there are hundreds of others). These types of adhesives are incredibly strong and provide an economical way to repair broken trinkets or items around the house. However, if you spill some of the powerful grip glue on yourself or other places it's not welcome, you will find that it can be difficult to remove. Fingernail Polish Remover- Simple and Effective

One of the easiest and surest ways to remove Mighty Bond or any other type of Cyanoacrylate adhesive is to use fingernail polish remover. However, you need to make sure that you choose a fingernail polish remover that contains acetone. Acetone eats away at these types of adhesives like nothing else, but you want to avoid using acetone to clean Cyanoacrylate adhesive that is stuck to plastic. Acetone can also cause damage to plastic surfaces or even melt smaller pieces.
Removing Super Glue from Your Skin

If you get Super Glue on your skin or your fingers, don't rush to the cabinet for a bottle of nail polish remover. Rather, immerse your hand or other affected body part in warm soapy water. Use a damp cloth to gently scrub the area where the glue is attached for 4 to 5 minutes. The adhesive should break down rather quickly and then you can use your fingernails to lightly scratch the remaining glue away from your skin. If that doesn't work, soak your fingers in olive oil for a few minutes, then try again.
Cleaning Cyanoacrylate Glue on Fabric

If you get Cyanoacrylate glue on fabric or material it can be one most difficult cleaning jobs you'll encounter. If the fabric or material is something that is not particularly valuable to you, you could use fingernail polish remover or acetone to easily dissolve the glue. However, if the appearance of the fabric is an issue, you'll want to try less destructive methods.

Start with an old toothbrush and some mild laundry detergent in warm water. Lightly scrub the area where the glue is stuck to the fabric and brush it for several minutes. Then, warm a few capfuls of vinegar in the microwave for about 15 to 20 seconds and brush that onto the glue. It will take a few minutes to soften the glue up, but vinegar works well and usually won't damage the cloth or fabric.
Commercial Solutions

There are a number of commercial solutions that you can purchase to clean Cyanoacrylate adhesive. Most hobby shops and some hardware stores carry some sort of Super Glue remover. In fact, one of the most popular products is actually branded: Super Glue Remover. There are other similar de-bonding products that work quite well also.
Household Solutions to Krazy Glue Messes

As mentioned above, warm vinegar can be used to remove superglue in some cases. Many people have also reported good results with denatured alcohol or even plain rubbing alcohol. If you're not concerned about damaging the surface where the Krazy Glue type adhesive has settled, you could also try using a plastic scraper or even a hot hairdryer.
